External Factors for Consultant Healthcare Epidemiologists

  • Physician self-referral law or “Stark Law”:
    • Prohibits a physician from making referrals for certain services payable by Medicare to an entity with which the physician has a financial relationship.
  • Inurement:
    • Per federal law, hospitals shall not pay extra to a doctor in order to get admissions, referrals, or other inducements.
    • Harmonize your rate across payors (e.g. hospitals with which you have a contract) to avoid inurement.
  • Salary/hourly rate schedule:
    • Check comparable reports for administrative and clinical salaries.
    • If applicable to the position you are seeking, calculate separate hourly rate for the activity of legal case review.
    • Ensure clinical duties do not get enmeshed in a contract for administrative work, which would change the classification of the contract.
    • Make sure the rate covers your overhead costs. This can be mitigated by increasing the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) percentile, calculating an administrative vs. clinical rate, and/or adding region adjustment.
